20/20  (2015)

20/20 is a group exhibition by MFA first year students from Wimbledon College of Art. This is a site responsive group show that aims to bring together different approaches and reflections around the possibilities, limitations and challenges of the “size” of a piece of artwork. At the Chelsea space a group of artists came together to accept the challenge of working within the limitation of space itself.

By limitation of space, a 20-by-20-cm art piece is the criteria for the show.

I was not convinced by the space at the beginning. However, a limitation often opens to possibilities. A small square frame happened to be an interesting size to begin the GAZE series. I think it helps drawing the viewers’ attention into the subject, which supports the idea of closely looking at the submergence of natural reality and through-the-screen images.

It is interesting to observe how each artist differently interpreted the same empty frame; how different interpretations closely reflexed each other in a small space. Both curators, Naomi Avsec and Lucy Malley, effectively curated all 38 pieces in the show. In a way, this event speaks about “I” and “we” in a small scale.
