Among (2015)
This is the proposal for an art project commission for Allia’s
Future Business Centre in Cambridge, which I work in collaboration with the artist, Yussef Agbo-Ola.
The company requires for a piece of work that creatively reflects the notion of a ‘wall of support’ – acknowledging both the support Allia has received from the local community, business community and large number of individuals as well as illustrating the support the company offers to its users and community neighbours.
Allia is a charity that supports social ventures –organizations that are dedicated to making a positive impact for people or the planet. The Future Business Centre in Cambridge is a purpose-built hub for social and environmental enterprises.
AMONG (A Multiplicity Of Numberless Growth) aims at presenting the idea that social awareness and supportive actions between individuals multiplies to collective consciousness in communities and society.
This concept interlaces Allia’s dedication, supporting social ventures for positive impact for people and the planet. Along with the Future Business Centre Cambridge’s purpose to support social and environmental start-ups, the artwork combines physical art forms, architecture and natural landscape to actual planting activity. It metaphorically and interactively illustrates conjoined support among Allia, local community, business community, and individuals.
Reflecting the notion of a “wall of support”; AMONG embraces the concept of Emergence, a process whereby larger entities, patterns, and regularities arise through interactions among smaller or simpler entities. The structure is influenced by and adapted to its atmospheric environment and geological transformation as well as human interaction. The piece composes three elements; mixtures of various kinds of seeds, sculptural-garden space, and act of live transformation.
Seeds:
Various kinds of seeds represent individual persons bounds to communities and expand to, a greater scale, with societies. Varicolored seeds also signify Allia’s users and its community neighbors.
Sculptural-garden space:
The garden design is inspired by the connection of different root systems underground and how this unseen system is a support for humanity’s food, environment and wellbeing. The landscape design will be supported by a mesh generated from an algorithm found in nature as a way of connecting people to the micro world we normally overlook when it comes to environmental awareness.
Act of live transformation:
The Sculptural garden is designed to allow people to randomly plant seeds. Growing plants help forming and transforming the structure of the art piece. As act of live transformation, the living sculpture will continuously adapt and rotate its form by this actual interaction. It acknowledges that a positive awareness and action from every individual can built a well-rounded supportive and sustained society. This activity, as well, coheres with the concept of Emergence.
